Marty Mackenzie (Lochlyn Munro) jest niespełnionym aktorem, który postanawia zostać prywatnym detektywem. Łączy swe siły ze zrzędliwym "fachowcem" - Jackiem Potterem (Leslie Nielsen) i razem postanawiają zapobiec morderstwu właściciela kopalni w małej mieścinie Beaver Ridge. Po jakimś czasie Marty zdaje sobie sprawę, że jego wyobrażenia odnośnie pracy prywatnego detektywa dalekie były od rzeczywistości.
